Currently, there is a vast array of lifting and traction equipment available, to the extent that many people frequently confuse devices with similar appearances. Electric hoists and electric winches are two such pieces of equipment that are often mixed up-so much so that some individuals attempt to use an electric winch in place of an electric hoist for lifting and hoisting operations.
In terms of appearance and operating principles, electric winches and electric hoists are indeed remarkably similar; both perform traction tasks by winding a steel wire rope around a drum. However, the specific applications for which they are designed differ significantly: electric hoists are primarily intended for lifting and hoisting operations within factory workshops, whereas electric winches are predominantly used for vehicle recovery and extraction. This raises the question: can an electric winch actually be used for lifting and hoisting tasks?
If one considers only the load-bearing capacity of an electric winch, using it as a substitute for an electric hoist might not seem problematic at first glance. However, the two devices differ fundamentally in their design intent. Electric hoists are designed to be paired with a trolley and mounted on a workshop's I-beam girder to perform vertical lifting operations; electric winches, conversely, lack this structural design feature. Consequently, they are incapable of performing vertical lifting and hoisting tasks and are instead limited to horizontal traction operations.
Nevertheless, some users-seeking to expand the functional versatility of their electric winches-have attempted to modify them. This typically involves welding a trolley mechanism (capable of attaching to an I-beam) onto the body of the electric winch. However, Chenghua Manufacturing strongly advises against such modifications. The integrity and strength of the welded joints cannot be guaranteed, which significantly compromises operational safety.
